About Pawan Kumar Bansal
Pawan Kumar Bansal, born in Sunam district of Sanrur on 16th July, 1948 is a member of Lok Sabha, representing Chandigarh. Early life of Pawan Bansal was spent in Patiala where he did his schooling from Yadvindra Public School. Later he moved to Chandigarh to get his LLB from Law Department at Punjab University, Chandigarh Campus.
Beginning his political life early in 1976 when he was appointed the General Secretary of Chandigarh Territorial Youth Congress, it has been a long and fulfilling journey ever since. Pawan Kumar Bansal is a member of Indian National Congress party. He represented Chandigarh as a member of Parliament for the 10th , 13th, 14th and the current Lok Sabha session.
A lawyer by profession, he also served as general secretary of Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association in 1978. After serving as President of Chandigarh Territorial youth congress and Punjab Pradesh Youth Congress, Bansal was appointed as a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1984. Later in 1991, he was elected to the 10th Lok Sabha as a member for Chandigarh, representing Congress party.
Mr. Bansal served 13th and 14th Lok Sabha terms along with being the member of various committees like, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Ministry of Home Affairs, Business Advisory Committee, Ministry of Finance, Minister of Water Resources and as a Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs. He also served as a Treasurer of Indian Parliamentary Group (IPG) from 2004-2009.
After his stint as Minister of State, Parliamentary Affairs from 2008-2009, Pawan Bansal was re-elected to 15th Lok Sabha. In October, 2012, Mr. Bansal took charge as Railway Minister of India. He was the first member of Indian National Congress party in 17 years to take charge of the ministry. He succeeded C P Joshi. The railway Budget proposed by Mr Bansal increased the freight charges but left passenger fares unchanged. The main attraction of the railway budget proposed by him was the availability of WIFI internet access across all trains servicing in India, which has not been implemented in the country so far. His budget for the largest railway network in Asia drew praise from the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh by terming it as “forward Looking”.
Mr Bansal who is married and has 2 children, has put various efforts for the betterment of his home constituency, Chandigarh. The latest project being approving a slum free Chandigarh City.
